I really had no idea of what random act of kindness task I was going to do today. I knew the inviting someone over for dinner was out, because well……. simply I wasn’t going to be home for dinner (although yes I could have done it for another night  I know).

Well unintentionally by the end of the day, I ended up doing two. First, I offered to sit for someone who could use a break sometime, and then after having someone go out of their way to assist me at the grocery store (when I usually have to track someone down) I decided to also write to the store management to compliment this employee as well. So without knowing what i would do…….. I ended up doing two. So not bad at all … not bad at all.

Busy  busy day! The day was too gorgeous not to get out and spend most of the day in it. Luckily I checked the task list early to prepare for the day. Since last time when I got the coupon clipping task I couldn’t do it because I hadn’t clipped  any coupons….. I have been good about clipping coupons.  I also had gotten the paper today and being Sunday there were of course tons of coupons. So  for my last stop on a day of sun and fresh air, I stopped of at the grocery store to pick up things for dinner, and I had my trusty envelope of the coupons I collected.  Suprisingly there was even two coupons in it I needed to use myself … so considering I hadn’t been a coupon person before, I benefited from starting the coupon clipping myself.

After loading my groceries onto the conveyor belt, I pulled out the two coupons I needed, and then left the ones I didn’t on the ledge for anyone who might follow me to look through and possibly use if they could. Will anyone? Will they just end up in the trash or something? Who knows. But maybe….. just maybe someone got to save a few extra pennies today.

Ok today I pulled a wild card. What might that mean you may ask? Well  I consider pulling a wild card to be -  finding the opportunity to perform a random act of kindness which due to being of a situational manner……. it couldn’t be put on the angel task list. There are many  random acts of kindness which I couldn’t put on the daily task option list because they were ones that depended upon weather, season, or situations which wouldn’t be available on a daily basis. I wanted to have  kindness tasks which could always be done so that I would never face a defeating situation of three tasks none of which I could do.  One of those random acts of kindness is paying the toll for the car behind you. I rarely find myself driving through a toll booth, so I didn’t include that on my list. Today however I was traveling such that I  went through a tunnel.  So I pulled the wildcard and chose to  use an alternative random act of kindness today. So yes, I went through the toll booth, paid for myself, then gave money for the car behind me, and one of  the “not so random, random acts of kindness” cards that I had made. With the gas prices today, I can’t imagine that that couldn’t put a smile on any traveler’s face!

So successfully fufilled my random act of kindness for the day……..and a great day it was

Tonight I am dragging. I am uncertain why, because it was a good day…….somewhat long at work, but overall not that bad. However I feel zonkered.

I knew who I wanted to send a thank you to, it hit me the other day. This friend from a few years ago crossed my mind the other day, and ever since I had thought that the next time I sent a thank you card, it would be to her. Well I should have also planned it a little better, because I searched for an address for her, and I couldn’t find one. :(  I spent quite a while googling, anywhoing, and all I could think of with no luck. Of course this means I am very determined now to find her addy, but for today’s thank you……it just won’t make it.

Instead I wrote a thank you to a different friend. (one I had an address for :)  )

Things sometimes just have a way of working out.  When  I volunteered the other day to bring the birthday cake in for a co-worker’s birthday, I had volunteered to do it for two co-worker’s who’s birthdays were close together. It was suggested I do them together since the dates were so close, however since they were  both in different weeks,  and I didn’t want the one who’s birthday was first to think we forgot her birthday and it was an after thought, I decided to go ahead and split them. I did one last week, and today was the other birthday. So last night after work I went and picked out two cakes (yes we have a cake eating crew) and a card. Again the agony of having such yummy cakes sitting in my fridge was pure torture .

So this morning I went into work with the cakes, and stashed them where they wouldn’t be discovered and started out on my morning work. A short bit later, a card comes by in the usual birthday manner for me to sign. This of course confuses me, because I hadn’t started circulating the card……..and obviously this wasn’t my card. Well apparently there was miscommunication (nothing new at my job) between the teams, and someone else had gone ahead and gotten cakes and a card for the same person I did.

I have to admit I was at first a little irked. What the heck was I going to do with two cakes? I mean I like sweets as much as the next person…… but really not two whole cakes. But as I said, things have a way of working out. Up to this point I hadn’t checked the Daretobeanangel home page to see the task options for the day.

Option - give cake to someone………. + me having two cakes = successful act of kindness task completion!

So yes, I gave one of the cakes to a girl at work who has 5 children. I know that cake will be eaten up in no time at her home!

Now I just have to figure out what to do with the second cake.

I had planned on dropping quarters in the meter today, but I had a dentist appt that took up most of my morning, so I didn’t get a lunch break to sneak that activity in. Then in missing half my work day  to drool in a dentist office, I got very caught up in my work activities. I have to confess I completely forgot about my task until the work day was over. With the huge dental estimate I received from the dental office (I think my dentist wants a boat this year),  purchasing a book didn’t work with today’s tight wallet.

So I did an alteration (I am so good at those). No, I missed talking to a co-worker I didn’t know, however, I did find the opportunity to chat with a neighbor I hadn’t spoken to before. She doesn’t live in my building, but the next building over. We chatted some about the weather (a lovely day, some about our complex, and a little about my lack of knowledge in our local sports team.) So in a way, as one of my kids would say….. “I made a new friend today.

I really do wish  someone would give me more ideas for my random acts of kindness task list, because although I absolutely love sending out cards, it seems like recently they have been popping up on the list more than anything. I have to admit on a busy day it is great when I see  a “send something” option on the daily list, however, but other times I  worry that I may get stuck in a rut.

So obviously I sent something today. Well sort of sent. I put a thank you card out for the person who delivers my mail. For me that was a bit of variety so that was what I chose. My mailman has always done a great job since I have lived here, so of course a thank you is warranted!All around us are people who do things for us every day…..and these things are such a part of our regular routine that we often don’t think about it. So to thank someone for how they make my day better (although I wouldn’t mind if some of the bills that arrive didn’t) seems appropriate. And just maybe…… a smile will come out of it.

Well, I couldn’t exactly put coins in a parking meter today since it is Sunday, so that option was completely unavailable. I sent a thank you note yesterday, so I really didn’t wish to do that today. So I decided the cd would be a good choice, especially it was a task I hadn’t tried yet. So what I decided to do was a slight variation of the one listed. I decided to burn a bunch of songs that a friend and I used to listen to all the time and sing to as well… in otherwords a sort of memorabilia cd. I had many of the songs on my pc (A dj friend used to use my pc a lot). I put together the play list to burn and had it all ready to burn. I am currently running into technical difficulty with my burner. I have tried twice……to burn a cd and it seems to burn without a hitch yet then when I go to play the cd……..it bombs. I am trying once more……and hopefully three times will be a charm. If not….this may be my first bomb for a task. (If it bombs I think I will send my friend one of the songs as an email attachment just for the fun of it!)

I am definitely one who gets affected by the weather. Today was a grey rainy day, and my energy level pretty much matched it. I do also believe my extremely busy week caught up on me a little bit as well. It was definitely a day to relax. I only went out to run a few errands and visit my candy store - Borders bookstore. A bookstore is the perfect place to visit on such a day.

Two of the tasks today were pretty similar. So I decided to write a thank you note. I just had to decide who to write it to. With thanks, one can always come up with a long list of groups and individuals to send notes of thanks and appreciation to. Instead of sending to a group, or someone from my past, I decided to send a thank you to a friend…. for simply that…being a good friend. Sometimes we forget the simple acknowledgement of those people that are right there every day, and a good friend is something truly special. A strong good close friendship is a gift and thus something to be thankful for. I know I am.

Friday………glorious Friday! After a week of sunny days, today the rainclouds drifted in to put a haze over the day. However it was a pretty decent day regardless (aren’t most Fridays?). We had the birthday for my co-worker and pigged out on the cakes I picked up yesterday (the prospect of fitting into a bathing suit this summer is starting to dim with the rain clouds at this pace).

Anyhow, for my act of kindness today, I decided a good thing was to speak to someone that I hadn’t spoken to before. So in the elevator at work, I saw this person who I see almost every day because we must start our work days at the same time. Yet we have never spoken. He has always been softspoken and I really don’t see him being very social at work. So instead of riding it in silence, I started up a conversation and introduced myself saying how foolish I felt seeing him on a daily basis and not even knowing his name. (i just realized in writing this how what I did may have been perceived as hitting on him. *shakes head*   hopefully it wasn’t interpreted that way). Anyhow it was a brief hello and introduction, because that is about all you can do on an elevator trip. But it was a step. In the least…. I know his name now and he knows mine and we are no longer…..the person we see in the elevator every day.

I have to admit I was a high achiever today, because I also chose to pick a name from the phonebook and send a card. I just really like an excuse to send cards. I think I may be becoming addicted to greeting card sending. I hope not because I haven’t seen any support groups for such an addiction!
